SIR HENRY SUMNER MAINE:  Ancient Law : its connection with the early history of society and its relation to modern ideas. London: John Murray, Albemarle Street. 1888, Printed by Spottiswoode and CO., New-Street Square London. 415 pages, including index and preface from 3 former editions. Twelfth edition.

This book established Maine's (1822-1888) reputation as a philosophical jurist. It's influence in the study of institutions is comparable to that of Darwin's "Origin" in the theory of evolution as applied to natural philosophy. (The first edition of "Ancient Law" in 1861 came two years after that of the "Origin.").
